Dr. Jayant Narlikar Passes Away at 86
Dr. Narlikar, who was born in Kolhapur, was known not only for his groundbreaking research in astrophysics but also for his remarkable contribution to science communication in Marathi. His writings, particularly the acclaimed book ‘Akashashi Jadle Nate’, brought scientific concepts closer to the common reader through clear, accessible language. He played a pivotal role in popularizing astronomy and science in India.
He completed his early education at Banaras Hindu University and pursued higher studies at the University of Cambridge, where he worked under the mentorship of renowned astronomer Sir Fred Hoyle. Together, they developed the Hoyle–Narlikar Theory, which challenged the conventional Big Bang model of the universe’s origin.
Upon returning to India, Dr. Narlikar contributed significantly to the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). Later, he founded the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) in Pune, providing a major boost to astronomical research in India.
Dr. Narlikar was the recipient of numerous national and international accolades, including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. In 2021, he also served as the President of the All India Literature Conference, reflecting his deep engagement with both science and literature.
News of his passing has cast a pall over the scientific, literary, and educational communities. Leaders, scientists, and readers alike have expressed their grief and admiration for his lifelong service.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid tribute to Dr. Narlikar in a heartfelt post on social media platform X:

He made invaluable contributions to science, both as a researcher and a writer who brought complex subjects like astronomy to the common people in simple terms. His works in Marathi enriched the scientific literature and delighted curious readers. We have lost not only a brilliant scientist but also an extraordinary writer. The state salutes his legacy.”
