Ganeshotsav 2025 : Uncertainty Looms as BMC Awaits Government Decision on POP Idol Immersion

With Ganeshotsav 2025 just a few months away, the long-standing dilemma surrounding the immersion of large Ganesh idols made from Plaster of Paris (POP) continues to spark debate and concern. While the High Court has permitted the manufacture of POP idols, the ban on their immersion remains in effect, leaving the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in a state of uncertainty.

Following the court's decision allowing the production of POP idols, idol makers have begun accepting large-scale orders, particularly from Ganesh Mandals seeking tall and elaborate statues. However, the unresolved issue of where these idols can be immersed has become a pressing concern for civic authorities.

Although the BMC has constructed artificial ponds to facilitate the immersion of household Ganesh idols, these facilities are not equipped to handle idols taller than ten feet. This limitation has raised questions about suitable alternatives for the immersion of large POP idols.

Speaking on the issue, a senior civic official stated, “As per the Constitution and High Court directives, we are preparing for immersion in artificial ponds. However, the state government must now clarify its position before the High Court regarding the immersion of large idols.”

Traditionally, thousands of grand Ganesh idols are immersed in the sea or natural water bodies during the festival each year. However, in recent years, the immersion of POP idols has been prohibited due to environmental concerns, with authorities promoting the use of eco-friendly, natural materials instead.

The recent court ruling permitting POP idol manufacturing has eased one hurdle for idol makers, but with immersion still off the table, confusion reigns among Ganesh Mandals, artisans, and the municipal administration. Many Mandals have already begun planning for the festival and are now demanding urgent clarity on the immersion process.

In light of the mounting pressure, high-level discussions between the state government and the BMC are expected soon to resolve the issue before the festival begins. Until then, all eyes are on the government’s next move, as thousands of devotees await a clear and environmentally responsible solution.
