Google's AI Mode Launches in India, Enhancing Search with Multimodal Features
Google has introduced its advanced AI-powered search feature, 'AI Mode', in India, marking a significant evolution in how users interact with the world’s most popular search engine. The service is now available in English through Google Labs, allowing Indian users to experience a more intuitive and intelligent search process.
Previously tested in the United States, AI Mode was officially expanded to more countries, including India, during the Google I/O 2025 event. The rollout is part of an experimental phase aimed at refining the tool with user feedback from one of Google’s largest markets.
Smarter Answers for Complex Questions
Powered by a customized version of Google Gemini 2.5, AI Mode can handle complex, multi-layered queries that go beyond simple keyword searches. It breaks down a user's question into multiple subparts, performs separate web searches, and combines the results into a single, comprehensive answer.
For example, a user asking, “My kids are very energetic, what are some creative options for them to play at home?” will receive suggestions that are specific, practical, and tailored to home-based, budget-friendly activities.
Multimodal Search: Text, Voice, and Image Support
One of the standout features of AI Mode is its multimodal capability. In addition to typing, users can now ask questions using voice commands or by uploading images. For instance, uploading a photo of an unknown plant could prompt the question: “What plant is this, and how do I take care of it?”
This innovation builds on India’s leadership in Google Lens usage, enabling users to search in more natural and contextual ways.
Part of Google’s Long-Term Search Vision
AI Mode is a major step in Google’s strategy to evolve its search experience. It follows the success of AI Overviews, which have already been used by over 1.5 billion users globally. While AI Mode aims to make the search experience more efficient and insightful, it also retains the fallback to traditional search results if the AI is uncertain about specific information.
Available via Google Labs
The feature is currently accessible through Google Labs, where users can sign up and try AI Mode firsthand. By participating, users also contribute to improving the service with real-world feedback.
With AI Mode, Google is not just upgrading search—it’s redefining how people interact with information, making intelligent, personalized answers more accessible than ever for Indian users.
