No More Birthday Celebrations in Government Offices: New Rule Issued by State Government

Celebrating birthdays or organizing personal events during office hours in government offices is now officially banned. The state government has issued a new directive strictly prohibiting such activities, stating that any violation will result in disciplinary action under the Maharashtra Civil Services Conduct Rules, 1979.

An official circular issued recently highlights that government employees are no longer allowed to celebrate birthdays, farewell parties, or any private events within office premises during working hours. The move aims to ensure that official time is utilized solely for administrative work and public service.

Birthday celebrations, especially in government offices, have become common over the years. These events often last longer than expected and sometimes involve employees leaving the office premises for meals, causing disruptions in workflow and productivity.

Citing these reasons, the government has made it clear that such personal gatherings amount to a misuse of office time and space. The order emphasizes that all government departments and employees must strictly adhere to this rule going forward.

As an alternative, the government has suggested that such celebrations can be organized either after office hours or on holidays, outside the office premises. However, this decision has reportedly led to dissatisfaction among some employees, who see it as a curtailment of informal bonding and morale-boosting practices in the workplace.

Despite the concerns, the government stands firm on its decision, stating that maintaining discipline and uninterrupted office functioning is the top priority.
