In Pune Case of Abuse Over Birth of Girl Child; Woman Starved and Confined for 15 Days
The victim, identified as Shivani Chandanshive, was married to Nihal Chandanshive, an IT professional residing in Pimpri Saudagar, Pune. According to reports, the couple had been married for a few years. Trouble began after Shivani gave birth to a girl, which allegedly led to sustained mental and physical abuse at the hands of her husband and in-laws.
Shivani revealed that her husband, mother-in-law Nirmala Chandanshive, father-in-law Arun Chandanshive, and sister-in-law began harassing her over the birth of a daughter. The situation worsened when she was denied food and locked inside a room for 15 days. Taking advantage of an opportunity when no one was home, she escaped with her child and reached her parents' home in Beed.
With the support of her family, Shivani approached the Shivajinagar Police Station in Beed and filed a formal complaint. Based on her statement, the police have registered a case against all four in-laws — Nihal, Nirmala, Arun, and the sister-in-law — under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including charges of domestic violence, illegal confinement, and cruelty.
This shocking incident has triggered outrage across the state, with women's rights activists calling for immediate and strict action against the accused. It also highlights the persistent and deeply rooted issue of gender bias, even in urban and educated households.
Authorities are investigating the matter, and further legal proceedings are expected soon. The case has once again brought into focus the urgent need for stronger societal reforms and stricter enforcement of laws to protect women from such inhumane treatment.
