In the wake of the devastating Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon, the airline has announced a major operational decision. Air India will reduce its international flights by 15 percent, effective immediately, as part of enhanced safety measures.

The tragic incident, which has shaken the entire nation, resulted in the deaths of 241 people, including passengers and individuals inside a medical college building into which the aircraft crashed. The plane, carrying 230 passengers, two pilots, and 10 crew members, reportedly crashed within seconds of takeoff from Ahmedabad Airport, slamming into the nearby building. Among the deceased were students and doctors inside the college premises.

Tragically, only one passenger survived the crash, making it one of the deadliest aviation disasters in Indian history. In a press conference, Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekhar expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to the bereaved families.

“This is a very difficult situation. I have no words to console the families of those who have lost their loved ones,” he said with visible emotion. As part of its immediate response, Chandrasekhar announced that Air India will cut 15% of its international operations until mid-July. He stated that the decision was taken in the interest of passenger safety and to avoid any further inconvenience.

In addition, a full technical and safety inspection of all aircraft, particularly the Boeing 777 fleet, will be undertaken. The airline has assured passengers that any complaints regarding flights will be addressed promptly, and alternate arrangements or full refunds will be provided if necessary.

The crash has triggered a nationwide debate on aviation safety standards, with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) expected to launch a detailed investigation into the cause of the accident. Initial reports suggest possible technical failure, but a formal statement is yet to be released. This incident marks a turning point for Air India, as it now faces the twin challenges of ensuring technical integrity and restoring passenger trust.
