Indian Navy Issues Strict Guidelines for Mumbai Fishermen Amid Rising Conflict
In the wake of heightened military tensions following Operation Sindoor—India’s retaliatory mission after the recent Pahalgam terrorist attack—the Indian Navy has issued strict guidelines for fishermen operating in the Arabian Sea. The advisory comes as part of broader coastal security measures amid rising conflict with Pakistan.
Retaliatory Operation Triggers Regional Escalation
On May 7, India reportedly destroyed nine terrorist camps across the border, sparking a sharp escalation in hostilities. In retaliation, Pakistan has launched a series of attacks, targeting multiple Indian cities with missiles and drones. These attacks, carried out over two consecutive days, were successfully intercepted and neutralized by Indian defense forces.
Security has been tightened nationwide, with particular attention to coastal cities like Mumbai. The Indian Navy, along with other security agencies, has ramped up surveillance and patrolling efforts across critical coastal zones.
Enhanced Coastal Security in Mumbai
Mumbai’s coastline is now under heightened watch as the Indian Navy, Mumbai Police, and Indian Coast Guard implement a joint strategy to fortify maritime defenses. Surveillance has been intensified at beaches, ports, and sea routes with the use of CCTV cameras and aerial drones.
According to officials, a comprehensive coastal security operation named 'Sagri Kavach' has been initiated. As part of the operation, fishermen are being advised to remain highly vigilant and report any suspicious maritime activity. All fishing vessels will now be subject to thorough inspections at entry and exit points to prevent infiltration by hostile elements.
Strict Restrictions in Naval Zones
In a critical directive, fishermen have been explicitly barred from entering the Offshore Defense Area (ODA)—a high-security maritime zone under the jurisdiction of the Indian Navy. Authorities have issued ‘shoot-to-kill’ orders against any unauthorized vessels found breaching this restricted zone.
Security agencies have also instructed the Department of Fisheries to exercise increased caution when authorizing fishing expeditions in the Arabian Sea during this tense period.
Call for Civilian Cooperation
Fishermen have been reminded of their pivotal role in safeguarding India’s maritime frontiers. Officials have urged the fishing community to act responsibly and cooperate fully with law enforcement and maritime authorities. In the current climate of national security, such cooperation is deemed crucial.
As the situation continues to evolve, the Indian Navy’s proactive measures aim to preempt and neutralize any potential threats emanating from the sea.
