Indian Railways’ First Digital Lounge to Lounge at Mumbai Central Station

In a major step towards modernizing passenger amenities, the first-ever Digital Lounge of Indian Railways is set to open at Mumbai Central station on the Western Railway line. This state-of-the-art facility will serve as a co-working space for travelers, offering a range of modern features similar to those found in airport lounges.

Railways remain a vital mode of transport in India, with millions of passengers commuting by train each day. To enhance this experience and cater to evolving passenger needs, Western Railway has introduced the concept of a Digital Lounge, aiming to blend convenience, productivity, and comfort within the railway premises.

The lounge is designed to provide a productive environment for travelers who often find themselves waiting due to train delays or long stopovers. While traditional waiting rooms or executive lounges allow for rest, they lack facilities conducive to work. The Digital Lounge seeks to bridge this gap by offering a workspace where passengers can conduct office tasks, attend meetings, manage emails, or even pursue college assignments—all while waiting for their train.

Equipped with Wi-Fi, charging stations, work tables, sofas, soundproof zones, free electricity, and even a café, the lounge will ensure a seamless work environment. Whether it's attending a virtual meeting or preparing a presentation, the facility is tailored to meet the needs of today’s mobile workforce.

“This initiative is especially beneficial for freelancers and remote workers who need professional working conditions on the go,” said Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway. “It’s not just for passengers—outsiders can also avail of this service at reasonable rates.”

Mumbai Central has been selected for this pilot project, and based on its success, similar lounges will be introduced at other major railway stations such as Bandra Terminus, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad.

The initiative is not only aimed at improving passenger experience but also at generating revenue. The Railway administration estimates an annual income of ₹50 lakh through this service. At a time when co-working spaces in metro cities are becoming increasingly expensive, the Digital Lounge offers an affordable and accessible alternative, particularly beneficial for Mumbaikars.

With the launch of the Digital Lounge, Indian Railways is taking a progressive step toward transforming railway stations into modern, multi-purpose transit hubs, enhancing the overall travel experience for the digital age.
