Luxury Flat and BMW: Supreme Court Reacts to Woman's Divorce Demands
An unusual demand was presented in the Supreme Court during the hearing. A woman who had lived with her husband for only 18 months requested a large financial alimony, a luxurious house in Mumbai, and an expensive BMW car during the divorce proceedings.
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court B. R. Gavai reacted strongly to this. He mentioned the woman's educational qualifications and advised her to stand on her own feet. "You are so educated, have done an MBA, worked in the IT sector. There are opportunities for you in cities like Bangalore and Hyderabad. Then why are you asking for money?", he questioned.
While presenting her side in court, the woman stated that her husband himself had filed for annulment and accused her of having a mental illness. "Do I seem schizophrenic?", she directly asked the judge. She also accused her husband of making her quit her job.
The lawyers representing the woman's husband noted that the husband's income has decreased compared to before and her demands are excessive. "The entire responsibility cannot be placed solely on the husband; the woman should also do something herself," the lawyers argued.
The Chief Justice clearly stated that she has no rights over her husband's father's property. Additionally, they suggested that she accept 4 crore rupees and look for job opportunities in IT hubs like Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad.
"You are educated, learn to earn for yourself rather than relying on others," advised the Chief Justice, reserving the decision.
