Shivbhojan Thali Scheme in Crisis: Funds Withheld for Six Months, Center Operators Threaten Statewide Protest
The popular Shivbhojan Thali Scheme, launched during the Maha Vikas Aghadi government to provide affordable meals to the poor, is now facing a serious financial crisis. Reports indicate that for the past six months, not a single rupee has been disbursed by the government to the operating centers, leading to growing unrest among center operators across Maharashtra.
Currently, over 5,000 Shivbhojan Thali centers continue to operate statewide, serving thousands of economically disadvantaged individuals. Despite the government allocating ₹270 crore in the annual budget for the scheme, the Food and Civil Supplies Department has yet to release the pending subsidies, causing operational strain and fears of closure.
In conversations with Lokshahi Marathi, several center operators confirmed that they have not received any financial assistance in recent months. They revealed that they have already met with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, submitting formal representations to highlight their grievances.
Frustrated by the continued inaction, the center operators have now issued a one-week ultimatum to the government. If the outstanding subsidy is not disbursed within this period, they have warned of launching a statewide protest. Many social organizations have also extended support, urging the government to act swiftly to ensure the continuation of the scheme, which has become a lifeline for the poor.
The operators emphasized that the Shivbhojan Thali Scheme is not just a welfare initiative but a necessity, especially for daily wage workers and the urban poor who rely on it for at least one nutritious meal a day. As public pressure mounts, all eyes are now on the state government and the concerned departments to respond promptly and prevent the collapse of a vital welfare scheme.
