Minister Gadkari Confirms Toll-Free Status for Two-Wheelers
Amid growing concern over viral reports claiming that two-wheelers would soon be subject to toll charges, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has issued a clear and firm denial. Terming the circulating news as “completely false and misleading,” Gadkari reassured citizens that there is no plan to impose toll on two-wheelers.
The rumors, which spread rapidly across social media and some news platforms, claimed that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) was preparing to introduce toll charges for two-wheelers on all national highways starting July 15, 2025. However, both Gadkari and the NHAI have categorically refuted these claims.
In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Gadkari stated:
“Some media houses are spreading misleading news regarding imposition of toll tax on two-wheelers. No such decision is proposed. Toll exemption for two-wheelers will continue in full. Spreading fake news without checking the facts to create a sensation is not a sign of healthy journalism. I condemn it.”
Backing the Minister’s statement, the NHAI also issued a clarification on its X handle:
“There have been reports in some media outlets that the Government of India is planning to levy user charges on two-wheelers. NHAI would like to clarify that no such proposal is under consideration. There is no plan to levy toll on two-wheelers.”
Currently, two-wheelers are exempt from toll charges on national highways — a policy that has long been in place to support affordable transportation for the general public. The viral claim had sparked confusion and concern among two-wheeler riders, many of whom feared a rise in travel expenses.
With both the minister and the highway authority issuing prompt clarifications, the matter has been settled: two-wheelers will remain toll-free on national highways, and there is no proposal to change this policy.
