MMRTA approves BEST bus fare hike immediately, but implementation uncertain
The Mumbai Metropolitan Transport Authority (MMRTA) has approved the BEST's proposal to increase fares. However, sources say that the official announcement of this decision is delayed as the final minutes have not been signed yet. The approval was given in the MMRTA meeting held on Wednesday.
BEST had proposed to increase the fare for a 5 km journey from Rs 5 to Rs 10 for regular buses and from Rs 6 to Rs 12 for air-conditioned (AC) buses. After getting the approval of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, the proposal was sent to the MMRTA for a final decision.
Meanwhile, along with the BEST fare hike, the April 30 deadline for rickshaw and taxi meter recalibration has been extended by a month. So far, only about 63 percent of the vehicles have been able to complete the recalibration process. The organizations had expressed fear that fines may be imposed on the remaining vehicles. Therefore, it was decided to extend the deadline in a meeting held on Wednesday.
