PM Modi Gifts Silver Clutch Purse to First Lady of Cyprus Philippa Karsera
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on a five-day diplomatic tour of Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia, presented unique and culturally significant gifts to Cypriot leaders during his visit — marking the first time in 23 years that an Indian Prime Minister has visited Cyprus.
As part of his diplomatic outreach, Prime Minister Modi gifted a handcrafted silver clutch purse to the First Lady of Cyprus, Philippa Karsera, and a Kashmiri handmade silk carpet to the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides.
A Silver Purse with a Royal Touch
The silver clutch purse, crafted in Andhra Pradesh, is a blend of traditional Indian craftsmanship and modern elegance. Created using the repoussé technique — a centuries-old metalworking process — the purse is adorned with floral motifs inspired by temple carvings and royal artwork.
Its curved structure, ornate handle, and intricately decorated edges lend it a regal appearance, while a semi-precious stone embedded in the center adds a touch of luxury. Traditionally used for ceremonial occasions, such purses are now cherished as fashion accessories and collectibles, symbolizing India's evolving yet rooted artistic sensibilities.
Kashmiri Silk Carpet: A Piece of Heritage
The Kashmiri silk carpet, presented to President Christodoulides, is a masterpiece from the Kashmir Valley, made from pure mulberry silk and dyed using natural colors. Known for their high knot density and lustrous finish, these carpets are treasured worldwide for their intricate detail and craftsmanship.
This particular carpet features a rich dark red base with pale and red borders, showcasing classic vine and geometric motifs. A highlight of the design is its two-tone visual effect, where the carpet appears to change color depending on the viewing angle and lighting, creating the illusion of two different designs in one rug.
These rugs often depict elements of Kashmir’s natural beauty — such as lakes, poplar trees, and flowers — making them not only decorative items but also cultural artifacts that reflect India's deep artistic traditions.
Diplomatic Symbolism
By choosing such culturally rich and hand-crafted items, Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s commitment to cultural diplomacy — using traditional arts to foster goodwill and showcase the nation’s vast heritage. These gifts are a testament to India’s craftsmanship, tradition, and soft power on the global stage.
Modi's ongoing tour aims to strengthen bilateral ties, expand trade cooperation, and promote Indian culture in global forums, with his gifts leaving a lasting impression on his Cypriot counterparts.
