On his historic two-day visit to Ghana, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Ghana’s highest civilian honour, the "Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana," by President John Dramani Mahama. This rare honour was accompanied by a 21-gun salute and a Guard of Honour, marking a significant moment in India-Ghana diplomatic relations.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Ghana’s capital, Accra, to a grand ceremonial welcome. This visit marks the first time in three decades that an Indian Prime Minister has visited the West African nation. Expressing his gratitude, PM Modi shared the news on social media and dedicated the honour “to all Indians.”

“This recognition is not just mine—it belongs to 1.4 billion Indians. I thank the people and government of Ghana for this great honour,” Modi said in his official statement. He also emphasized India's commitment to strengthening ties with Ghana and pledged continued support in areas of development, security, and anti-terrorism cooperation.

Following the formal ceremony, PM Modi and President Mahama held a high-level bilateral meeting, during which four key agreements were signed between the two nations. These agreements span across trade, education, technology, and cultural exchange, further reinforcing the growing partnership.

PM Modi also extended a formal invitation to President Mahama to visit India, highlighting the mutual desire to elevate Indo-Ghanaian relations to new heights.

Ghana’s government stated that the award was conferred in recognition of Prime Minister Modi’s visionary global leadership, effective governance, and efforts to promote South-South cooperation. The Ghanaian President hailed Modi as a “respected global statesman” who has played a significant role in international diplomacy and economic development.

This visit is seen as a major diplomatic milestone and a symbol of the deepening friendship between India and Ghana, both of which are key members of the Global South and share common goals on global platforms.
