Pre-Monsoon Rains in Kolhapur District; Rajaram Dam Water Level Reaches 16 Feet 9 Inches
As a result of the rising river level, the Rajaram Dam is now submerged, and the road between Kasba Bawda and Vadanga has been closed to traffic. Authorities have placed barricades along the route to ensure public safety. Notably, the water level at Rajaram Dam has reached 16 feet 9 inches, an unusual occurrence for the month of May, raising concerns about potential flooding and waterlogging.
Agricultural Activities Severely Affected
The untimely rains have also dealt a heavy blow to the agricultural sector. Harvested crops have been damaged, and tillage and land preparation activities have come to a halt. Traditionally, farmers in the region begin ploughing, weeding, and seed preparation by the end of May in anticipation of the Kharif season. However, the relentless rains have delayed these preparations, creating uncertainty among the farming community.
Decline in Seed and Fertilizer Sales
The uncertain weather conditions have also affected the agricultural supply chain. Sales of seeds and fertilizers have slowed considerably, with vendors and farmers both adopting a wait-and-watch approach. Many are hoping for a pause in rainfall to resume cultivation activities and make up for lost time.
The district administration continues to monitor the situation closely and has urged residents and farmers to stay alert and follow official advisories.
