Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Manipur next week. As this is expected to be Modi's first visit after the outbreak of violence, the entire nation is focused on this tour. The opposition had consistently criticized the violence in Manipur and the central government's role. Now, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Manipur.
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs stated in a statement issued on Thursday that after extensive discussions, two major organizations, the Kuki National Organization (KNO) and the United Peoples' Front (UPF), have signed an SOO agreement with the government. The core of this agreement is to maintain the geographical unity of Manipur and resolve issues within the democratic framework. The Kuki-Zo Council has decided to open the second national highway, which will ensure the smooth supply of essential goods.
This SOO agreement was first made in 2008. Since May 3, 2023, conflicts between the Kuki and Meitei communities have erupted in Manipur. The Meitei community's demand for inclusion in the Scheduled Tribes was strongly opposed by the Kuki community in the hilly areas. As a result, the ensuing violence has claimed 260 lives so far. Hundreds of families have been displaced. Meanwhile, all eyes are on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Manipur.
