RSS Weighs In on Maharashtra Language Row, Urges Local Language Education
Amid the ongoing debate over the Marathi language in Maharashtra, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has issued its first official response, following the unexpected unity between Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray. The RSS's position on the language row is being viewed as politically significant, especially as it could pose challenges for its ideological ally, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Speaking on the issue, RSS publicity chief Sunil Ambekar reiterated the organization’s long-standing view:
“The RSS believes all Indian languages are national languages. Citizens in every state should receive education in their local language. Local languages must be prioritized.”
This statement comes at a time when the language issue in Maharashtra has reignited political tensions, with parties across the spectrum taking strong positions to assert regional linguistic identity.
Backdrop: State Withdraws Mandatory Hindi in Schools
The language row gained momentum after the Maharashtra government withdrew its decision to make Hindi mandatory in primary education. This move was met with staunch opposition from both the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray). The two parties, often seen at ideological odds, have now come together in support of prioritizing Marathi in the education system.
This rare show of unity among regional parties has added pressure on the ruling alliance, and the RSS's recent statement is being analyzed for its potential political impact in the state.
Key Takeaways from the RSS Meeting
The RSS also recently concluded its All India Prant Pracharak meeting, during which key issues were discussed by representatives from across the country. Topics included the current language controversy, peace efforts in Manipur, and broader strategies to promote social cohesion.
It was revealed that 17,609 trained RSS volunteers are currently active, and the Sangh has conducted meetings in over 1 lakh locations nationwide aimed at fostering social harmony. The RSS’s emphasis on linguistic and cultural diversity — while maintaining national unity — is expected to influence the discourse on language politics in Maharashtra in the coming weeks.
