Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar Share Stage in Satara, But Political Distance Remains Intact

In a rare public appearance together, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar shared the dais during the 66th death anniversary commemoration of Education Maharshi Padma Bhushan Dr. Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil. The event, held at the Karmaveer Samadhi area in Satara, was organized by the Rayat Shikshan Sanstha, of which Sharad Pawar is the president.

Though physically present at the same venue, the uncle-nephew duo maintained noticeable distance, with no public interaction or acknowledgment of each other during the event—rekindling speculation about the ongoing political rift within the Pawar family.

Sharad Pawar’s Address: Reflection on Education and National Security

In his speech, Sharad Pawar focused on the legacy of Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil, highlighting the inclusive vision that shaped the Rayat Shikshan Sanstha, which now operates 742 branches, serves over 4.18 lakh students, and employs 11,600 staff.

“Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil transformed the lives of the common man through education. The real reason for the quality of education is the dedication and commitment of teachers towards their students,” Pawar said.

He also announced the launch of Rayat Sanstha’s monthly publication, while acknowledging the pressing challenges the institution faces—namely, declining student numbers and the need to enhance educational quality.

Sharad Pawar ended his speech with remarks on India’s defense policy, referencing his own tenure as Defence Minister. He emphasized India’s peaceful stance, but noted the country's readiness to respond decisively to any aggression. He proudly mentioned his initiative to open opportunities for women in the armed forces, noting their growing contributions to defense and strategic analysis.

A Political Reunion Still in Question

Just days earlier, Sharad Pawar had hinted at possible reconciliation between the two NCP factions—his own and that of Ajit Pawar. This had sparked speculation of a broader Pawar family reunion, similar to the recent developments within the Thackeray family.

However, the lack of engagement between Sharad and Ajit Pawar at Friday’s event painted a different picture. Observers noted that despite being on the same stage, the two leaders remained visibly distant, without exchanging greetings or engaging in conversation.

Event Attended by Thousands

The commemorative event was attended by a large gathering of Rayat Sanstha officials, teachers, students, and citizens. Sharad Pawar concluded by commending the institution's inclusive values, stating that Karmaveer’s message of education beyond caste, religion, and language remains as relevant today as ever.

As political observers continue to monitor the dynamics within the Pawar family, the key question remains: Will the gap between uncle and nephew continue to widen, or is a reunion still possible in the evolving landscape of Maharashtra politics?
