'She Was in a Relationship With the Person'; Claim Hagawane Family Lawyer in Court
Pune, Mulshi – In a significant development in the Vaishnavi Hagawane death case, the lawyers representing the accused presented their arguments before the court on Wednesday. The case, which has drawn public attention, involves the alleged suicide of Vaishnavi Hagawane under suspicious circumstances.
Following the hearing, the court remanded Vaishnavi's husband, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law to one-day police custody. Meanwhile, her father-in-law and another sister-in-law were sent to police custody until May 31.
During the proceedings, the defense lawyers—representing the Hagawane family—made controversial claims regarding Vaishnavi’s character. They alleged that Vaishnavi had been involved in a relationship with an "unwanted" person outside her marriage. The lawyers suggested that rejection from this individual might have driven her to take the extreme step of suicide.
Further raising eyebrows, the defense argued that slapping a wife does not constitute torture, and that hitting her with a plastic bandage should not be considered physical assault.
These statements have sparked concern and debate over victim-blaming in domestic abuse cases, with legal experts and social activists expressing strong reactions to the defense’s line of argument.
The investigation continues as police work to uncover the exact circumstances surrounding Vaishnavi's death.
