The sacred festival of Vat Purnima Vrat, observed by married Hindu women for the long life and well-being of their husbands, will be celebrated this year on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. Mythological Significance

According to ancient Hindu scriptures, Savitri, through her unwavering devotion and determination, was able to win back the life of her husband Satyavan from Yamaraj, the god of death. Her devotion compelled even Yama to bend his rules, symbolizing the power of a devoted wife’s love and prayers. To commemorate this legend, married women worship the Banyan tree (Vat Vriksha) and observe a nirjala vrat (waterless fast) on this day.

Purnima Tithi and Shubh Muhurat

As per the Hindu Panchang, the Purnima Tithi begins at 11:35 AM on June 10 and ends at 1:13 PM on June 11, 2025. The most auspicious time for performing Vat Savitri Vrat puja is from 11:55 AM to 12:51 PM on June 10. Additionally, performing the puja during Brahma Muhurta (early morning before sunrise) is considered highly beneficial. The time from sunrise to noon is also deemed favorable for conducting the rituals.

Rituals and Observances

On the day of Vat Purnima, married women rise before sunrise, bathe, and offer prayers to the household deities. They then take a solemn vow for their husband’s longevity. The necessary items for the Banyan tree puja include:

  • Incense sticks, lamps, garlands, and flowers

  • Five types of fruits (mango being essential)

  • Adornment materials for Suvasini puja

  • A sacred thread to tie around the tree

Women dress in traditional bridal attire—silk sarees, mangalsutra, bangles, tikli, kumkum, gajra, and payal (anklets)—and perform parikrama (circumambulation) around the banyan tree three or seven times, tying the sacred thread and listening to the story of Savitri and Satyavan.

While some women maintain a nirjala fast, others may break the fast after sunset or after performing the tree worship. The vrat is observed with the belief that it ensures marital bliss and the same husband for seven lifetimes, just like Savitri.

Cultural and Spiritual Essence

Vat Purnima is not just a religious observance but a reaffirmation of the sacred marital bond symbolized by the seven vows of marriage. It highlights values like loyalty, commitment, and devotion in relationships. The banyan tree, representing life, creation, and protection, is revered as a living symbol of endurance and stability.

Even in modern times, the essence of Vat Purnima remains intact. Women across cities and villages participate in the rituals with great enthusiasm. Social media is filled with images of traditionally dressed women sharing messages of love and devotion. The festival becomes an occasion to celebrate relationships, honor traditions, and strengthen family unity.

In essence, Vat Purnima goes beyond ritual—it's a festival of love, resilience, and unwavering faith, continuing to inspire generations of women with the legendary story of Savitri and Satyavan.
