Beware! Ordering Food from Zepto? You May Receive Moldy Items; FDA Takes Strong Action

FDA takes strict action against mold risk in online food ordering

In a major development, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has revoked the operating license of Zepto's Dharavi facility after food items were found to contain defects. The FDA confirmed this action, raising concerns over food safety at the company.

In response to the FDA's decision, Zepto issued a statement assuring customers that the company has initiated a comprehensive review process to maintain the highest standards of food safety and hygiene.

According to the suspension order issued by Assistant Commissioner of the Food Department, Anupama Balasaheb Patil, the Dharavi facility cannot reopen until permission is granted by the licensing authority. The inspection, conducted by Food Safety Officer Ram Bodke, was carried out under the direction of Minister of State for Food Safety Yogesh Kadam and under the supervision of Joint Commissioner of Food, Mangesh Mane.

The regulatory authority’s findings were alarming. The most serious issues included alleged mold growth on food items, stagnant water near storage areas due to poor sanitation, inadequate cold storage that failed to meet temperature regulations, and wet, unclean floors. Additionally, food products were found to be stored improperly, including directly on the ground.

"Public health cannot be compromised. We are committed to strict and transparent enforcement," said FDA Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar, emphasizing the importance of maintaining food safety standards.
